This book is nothing like any others I have read by Dostoyevsky， or any other author for that matter unless it was meant to be a comedy。 It is ridiculous， and superbly so。 For this reason， and that it gave me such a respite from more serious reading， I gave it 5 stars。 Couldn’t we all use some exaggerated craziness in our lives？ The writing is as FD writes; beautifully descriptive and poetic。 Everyone worships the main character， no matter how mean， wrong， egotistical and just plain crazy he is。 This book is nothing like any others I have read by Dostoyevsky， or any other author for that matter unless it was meant to be a comedy。 It is ridiculous， and superbly so。 For this reason， and that it gave me such a respite from more serious reading， I gave it 5 stars。 Couldn’t we all use some exaggerated craziness in our lives？ The writing is as FD writes; beautifully descriptive and poetic。 Everyone worships the main character， no matter how mean， wrong， egotistical and just plain crazy he is。 This is somewhat interesting as this is happening today in the USA in our politics。 I can therefore relate to the storyteller as this is infuriatingly frustrating！ 。。。more

"Dostoevsky is finished。 He will no longer write anything important。" is what one of the editors commented on this novel， which was written as an attempt to re-enter in the literary world after his exile and absence for almost a decade。 Sadly， for the editor， he could not be more wrong （and thus chimes in The Grand Inquisitor with the Devil himself as a nightmarish dream）。The Village of Stepanchikovo， like Uncle's Dream， is a comedy。 The characters so created， though in a comedic tone， mirror th "Dostoevsky is finished。 He will no longer write anything important。" is what one of the editors commented on this novel， which was written as an attempt to re-enter in the literary world after his exile and absence for almost a decade。 Sadly， for the editor， he could not be more wrong （and thus chimes in The Grand Inquisitor with the Devil himself as a nightmarish dream）。The Village of Stepanchikovo， like Uncle's Dream， is a comedy。 The characters so created， though in a comedic tone， mirror the reality of the obnoxious duplicity in the name of virtue and honour。 Fomo Fomich being the centre of it all， he is everything wrong， but even in him there could be a philosophy which might support the deluding tantrums of this man。 Or perhaps we are judging him wrong， perhaps he genuinely believes himself to be noble and generous; all his actions aligned to this fantasy of his being？ Well it is for the reader to judge。 I loved to hate his eccentricities yet Dostoevsky gave him my favourite quote from the book，If you want to know what I've been suffering， go to Shakespeare。 In his Hamlet， he describes the state of my soul。Yegor， the Uncle， is another intriguing character， who is central to the entire story。 He is noble in its very literal sense， which tends towards idiocy。 But even through his submissive meekness， he shows some strength of character occasionally， specially when he is not directly involved， again solidifying his nobility。In the narrator， we find a young intelligent man， who is profound and learned but vain in his intellect， which is probably a jibe at his own younger self， making the character more vivid。 Sergey Alexandrovich， is mostly a spectator and hardly participates in the flow of the story， except the reason for his arrival。 It could be attributed to his shyness and good-humoured sense， who though advises the chief actors but never participates completely。 Nastasya， in her brief appearances， is strong and proud， which makes me wish to have been able to know her more， but that wouldn't have helped the mystifying aspect of hers， needed for the plot。This satire of a hypocrite society takes many digs at the intellectual delusions of various educated men， the obsession with a foreign culture， the illusionary belief of self-sacrifice in the guise of selfishness， the literary intellectuals and many more。Fun fact， one of these digs were made on 'The Contemporary' （whose editor has been quoted above） as a reply to various jeers made by them on Dostoevsky during his absence。The story started off somewhat plainly but the second half makes up for it。In Dostoevsky's own words （and a perfect way to sum it up）"The long story that I am writing for Katkov displeases me very much and goes against the grain。 But I have already written a great deal， it's impossible to throw it away in order to begin another， and I have to pay back a debt。"which eventually transformed to"I am convinced that there are many weak and bad things in my novel; but I am convinced - I stake my life on it！ - that there are very fine things。 They sprang from the heart。 There are scenes of high comedy that Gogol would have signed without hesitation。And I am convinced too that though tedious and lagging at parts， it does have elements worth acknowledging。 The second part of the novel feels more like a Dostoevskian tale though very different with its comedic elements， the ending being extremely unique in his literary world。（Also， three more to go and I would have read all sixteen of his novels/novellas。） 。。。more

One of the first two novels Dostoyevsky wrote after his decade long exile， this story is more fluidly written and expertly crafted than most of his pre-exilic writings。 The flourishes of the genius to come were certainly present to some degree。 The characters were tightly constructed。 The story is meant to be a farce， a hysterical comedy of sorts。 The characters therefore are meant to function as caricatures and exist just outside of the plain of normalcy， and they do so well enough。 Foma Fomich One of the first two novels Dostoyevsky wrote after his decade long exile， this story is more fluidly written and expertly crafted than most of his pre-exilic writings。 The flourishes of the genius to come were certainly present to some degree。 The characters were tightly constructed。 The story is meant to be a farce， a hysterical comedy of sorts。 The characters therefore are meant to function as caricatures and exist just outside of the plain of normalcy， and they do so well enough。 Foma Fomich， who can be described as the foil， is a master manipulator， and in that regard his speeches in the book are expertly written。 The movements of the major scenes build the tension of the manipulatory nature of the characters quite well， so in so far as Dostoyevsky needed to accomplish his aims， he does so with precision。And yet， I really did not enjoy this book at all。 While it's clear to me that Dostoyevsky realized his goals， he did so while crafting an entire ensemble of extremely unlikable characters。 Even the most likable characters in this book were exhausting and insufferable， and I found myself agitated by the complete lack of will and integrity of every character in this book。 Oscar Wilde wrote these sorts of farces a few decades later with more success， because even when he went too far with the coincidental and unbelievable， he did so with characters that were often charming and engaging。 This book ends with a thump， as most of the characters end where they began and somehow they're happier about it， as though something had changed。 Most exhausting of all， in some ways it can be argued that the villain wins by simply convincing everyone that he was a hero。 It all left me deflated by the end。 。。。more

The Village of Stepanchikovo: Gogolian Absurdity in Society Stepanchikovo was written at the same time as Notes from a Dead House- one of Dostoevsky's finest。 Notes from a Dead House is deeply melancholy- a riveting and moving story of the dignity of the human will， moral philosophy， the duality of the Russian soul with its spiritual 'underground'， and a brilliant denouncement of Hegelian progressivist concept of rational history- specifically against Hegel's 1822 Philosophie der Weltgeschichte The Village of Stepanchikovo: Gogolian Absurdity in Society Stepanchikovo was written at the same time as Notes from a Dead House- one of Dostoevsky's finest。 Notes from a Dead House is deeply melancholy- a riveting and moving story of the dignity of the human will， moral philosophy， the duality of the Russian soul with its spiritual 'underground'， and a brilliant denouncement of Hegelian progressivist concept of rational history- specifically against Hegel's 1822 Philosophie der Weltgeschichte （Philosophy of History）， which Dostoevsky read in exile along with Kant's Critique of Pure Reason。 In contrast， Stepanchikovo is a simple and humorous story with overexaggerated and simplistic psychological portraiture。 It's the only novel by Dostoevsky which is purely comedic。 Certainly， it was written for a general audience in order for Dostoevsky to return to the literary scene after his Serbian exile， and for personal escapism， so that explains part of its simplicity- but it seems odd something so absurd was written by Dostoevsky at the same time something so profound。 It's more reminiscent of his pre-exile years than his later works。 At first read， it seems like a silly story of personal squabbles， but reading it autobiographically you can see Dostoevsky's personal struggles within the interplay of personalities after his near-execution。 And in relation to Notes from a Dead House， you see here a shift towards understanding his own youthful Socio-political dogma （utopian socialism） as a pathological belief system that is corrosive to the human soul。 The humor here serves a reflective purpose， as Gogol writes "The longer and more carefully we look at a funny story， the sadder it becomes"。 Foma is a ridiculous caricature of a villain。 Uncle Rostanev is a characterless， naïve and storiless saint。 Everything is 'on the nose' in this story。 Aleksandrovich literally stumbles into the skandal ensemble scene。 The personal infighting is meant to be comical and exaggerated。 Nobody's reactions are life-like or interesting。 There are no interesting philosophical diatribes- only absurd debates between pompous idiots and go in circles。 Even though you do see clear voices for every character， there is no depth to any of them。 But that is rather the point: this is both a homage and a refutation of Gogol written in his surrealist， grotesque style- which addresses the constant self-deception of the individual consciousness。I have a hard time not reading this autobiographically。 You see Dostoevsky sketching out the ideological paths he could have taken- and the path of his beloved Russia- and how these ideologies shape the image。 The petty tyranny of Fomich is Dostoevsky's youthful impulses- his arrogance at his fame from publishing Poor Folks- contrasted with Aleksandrovich's Uncle Rostanev， who personifies the lessons Dostoevsky learned while nearly executed and serving time in the gulags of Serbia。 Rostanev is a precursor of the thought experiment in The Idiot of Prince Myshkin; how can a good person， a saint even， exist in such a cruel world without being subsumed by it？ In some ways， this is a predecessor of Demons; the people invite the 'devil' Foma in with open arms， immediately after exposing and exiling him。 Just like Socio-Political Demagoguery， Foma's manipulation is subtle and intoxicating- slowly lulling the victim into a simplistic bliss。 Secondly， there is an anger against the 'false prophets' of Russia- both the revolutionaries and the conservative counter-revolutionaries （who are only serving to make the utopian revolution more fanatical and blood-thirsty in Dostoevsky's view）。 Stepanchikovo is written in a Gogolian surrealist tragi-comic style。 Remember- reading Belinsky's letter （the first Russian intellectual to adopt Marx） against Gogol is what got Dostoevsky arrested and nearly executed， so it's easy to understand why Dost has some residual resentment。 Nikolai Gogol is exaggerated in Foma Fomich Opiskin。 While Dostoevsky and Gogol were in lockstep against state-enforced Atheism and the correlated Marxism， Dost criticized Gogol for his flippant， sometimes accidental and reckless attacks against Tsarism in the chaotic pre-Bolshevik environment。 Fomich's diatribe during his expulsion about moral responsibility to the Tsar seems to be the thrust of Dostoyevsky's problem with Gogol。 In Part II， Aleksandrovich literally wakes up in a surreal environment- "nothing compares with the strangeness of my awakening next morning"。 Kafka may be the most famous surrealist， but he copied this style from Gogol; Really an absurd book。 This is the first book by Dostoyevsky where I've really felt the cultural distance。 I'm sure some things are more entertaining in the original Russian， and certain parts definitely make more sense to his contemporaries。It's still an entertaining book， if nothing else then for the banter and ridiculous characters。Not much more to say。 This isn't one of the deep psychological dramas that Dostoyevsky is known for， but rather just a silly little book。 Really an absurd book。 This is the first book by Dostoyevsky where I've really felt the cultural distance。 I'm sure some things are more entertaining in the original Russian， and certain parts definitely make more sense to his contemporaries。It's still an entertaining book， if nothing else then for the banter and ridiculous characters。Not much more to say。 This isn't one of the deep psychological dramas that Dostoyevsky is known for， but rather just a silly little book。 。。。more

الرواية: قرية ستيبانتشيكوفو وسكانهاالكاتب: فيودور ميخائيلوفيتش دوستويفسكيالمترجم: إدريس المليانيالرواية مقسمة إلى جزئتين، الجزء الأول الأحداث فيه بتفصيل أكثر والحبكة تبدأ في الجزء الثاني حيث التشويق والسرعة في سرد الأحداث。 لا يستطيع القارئ وأنا ربما أعني نفسي في الدرجة الأولى؛ أن يقرأ فصلًا واحدًا ويتركه، وحتى أن في آخر مائتي صفحة، قد لا يستطيع القارئ ترك الكتاب فهو يكون مشوقًا جدًا وقد اكتشفت جانبًا آخر لكاتبي المفضل。 حيث أنه قد عاش في زمن يستعبد فيه الناس المحرومين من كونهم نبلاء وكذلك يطلعن ع الرواية: قرية ستيبانتشيكوفو وسكانهاالكاتب: فيودور ميخائيلوفيتش دوستويفسكيالمترجم: إدريس المليانيالرواية مقسمة إلى جزئتين، الجزء الأول الأحداث فيه بتفصيل أكثر والحبكة تبدأ في الجزء الثاني حيث التشويق والسرعة في سرد الأحداث。 لا يستطيع القارئ وأنا ربما أعني نفسي في الدرجة الأولى؛ أن يقرأ فصلًا واحدًا ويتركه، وحتى أن في آخر مائتي صفحة، قد لا يستطيع القارئ ترك الكتاب فهو يكون مشوقًا جدًا وقد اكتشفت جانبًا آخر لكاتبي المفضل。 حيث أنه قد عاش في زمن يستعبد فيه الناس المحرومين من كونهم نبلاء وكذلك يطلعن على كم من الممكن أن يكون الفرد منافقاً لكي يركض وراء مصلحته وعيشًا كريمًا من فقط قوله كلامًا معسولًا أو متكلفًا في التذمر وإساءة من يريد أن يرحمه ويحصل على شفقته。 وهنا أنا لا اتكلم عن المستعبدين، أنا اتحدث عن شخصية أخرى。 تدور أحداث الرواية على لسان ابن اخ الكولونيل، وقد تم إرساله من قبل عمه إلى قرية ستيبانتشيكوفو لكي يتزوج فتاة جميلة أسمها ناستينكا، وقد ذهب بأمر عمه لنداء الواجب。 سمع أثناء طريقه أحاديث متنوعة أن أحد السكان في تلك القرية وهو فوما فوميتش الذي عاش في منزل عمه الضخم ذات الحديقة الجميلة والكبيرة。 والتي تتسع للعديد من السكان للعيش فيه。 كانت الشخصيات جدًا غريبة حتى أنا ابن أخ الكولونيل قد استغرب من وضعهم وقد ظن نفسه في مستشفى المجانين。 فوما فومتش رجلُ جدًا دنيء فهو يعكر صفو المنزل بحديثه المتحذلق ولا أعرف لماذا الجنرالة الأم فاقدة الصواب وهوسها بهذه الشخصية فلا يستطيع المنزل الاستغناء عن هذا الشخص البائس。 في الخاتمة كانت الأحداث سريعة。 ذكر الكاتب في الخاتمة أنه سيتطرق في قصة أخرى عن السيد باختشيف بكل تفصيل。 كم أود اقتناء ذلك الكتاب حال معرفتي عن عنوانهقرأت هذه الترجمة العظيمة لرواية فيودور ميخائيلوفيتش دوستويفسكي، وهي ترجمة إدريس الملياني، وهي ترجمة عظيمة من اللغة الروسية إلى العربية مباشرة، كم قام بعمل رائع。 فحيث؛ إنه ترجمها عن اللغة الأصل، وقد كتب باللغة الفرنسية حيث يتطلب الأمر ذلك، وأن ما نقل إلى الفرنسية بسبب حوار شخصية تتلفظ بالفرنسية أحيانا。 وكوني ملمة باللغة الفرنسية، قد وجدت أن اللغة الفرنسية،。 أيضًا بلا أخطاء。 وترجمته كانت بلا أخطاء。 وقد عقب على ذلك في مقدمة الكتاب، أن ترجمة عن أخرى تفرق وقد اقتنعت بذلك، عندما رأيت نسخة رديئة لترجمة نفس الكتاب لشخص غير متمكن في عنوان واحدة من الفصول حيث أن الترجمة الأصل هي "الثور الأبيض" قد ترجمه إلى "البقرة البيضاء"。 هذه مجرد مقدمة عن أن ترجمة عن أخرى تفرق كثيرًا ويجب أختيار الترجمة بعناية خاصة في الأدب الروسي。。 。。。more
